Welcome to the Reliability Engineering and Informatics Laboratory (REIL)!

The Reliability Engineering and Informatics Laboratory (REIL) is a research laboratory in the School of Mechanical, Aerospace, and Manufacturing Engineering at the University of Connecticut (previously the System Reliability and Safety Laboratory (SRSL) in the Department of Mechanical Engineering at Iowa State University). Our research is focused on using probabilistic and statistical methods to enhance the reliability, resiliency, and sustainability of complex engineered systems. We have actively applied this research expertise to various engineering applications while maintaining a core emphasis on design and prognostics. Our two core application areas are (1) design under uncertainty of mechanical components and systems and (2) predictive health management of lithium-ion rechargeable batteries and rotating machinery. The primary outcomes of our research are new methods and tools that lead to better decisions in early-stage system design and post-design health management and improve reliability, resiliency, and sustainability. Click on the pages under “Research” for detailed descriptions of our focused research areas and here for a list of funded projects.
